Konark: The Home of Sun Temple


Famous for its 13th-Century Sun Temple, Konark is located in the state of Odisha, India. Bhubaneshwar is the leading city situated near the town, and is also the nearest airport and railway station. Built in the shape of a giant chariot, the magnificent Sun Temple at Konark is one of the seven wonders of India. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The beautiful Sun Temple made of black granite is now mostly in ruins as the temple fell into disuse during the reign of Mughal emperor Jahangir after his convoy desecrated it. However, for those who have an interest in history and ancient architecture, the temple still retains its charm and provides ample of great structures and interesting information.

Konark is also known for its famous annual dance festival called Konark Dance Festival. If you are fascinated by classical dance, this festival is a must-see as it showcases several classical Indian dance forms, with a special emphasis on the traditional classical dance form of Orissa: Odissi.

Visited more often on a day-trip by the travellers visiting Bhubaneshwar and Puri, Konark has a few good accommodation options within the town.
