Kannur: The Land of Spices
A quaint sleepy town towards the northern side of Kerala, Kannur (formerly known as Cannanore) is not that famous among the tourists like Kozhikode or Thiruvananthapuram, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful in terms of amazing beaches and mesmerizing historic sites. In fact, it was one of the major trading centers of spices and other commodities in South India and attracted traders not only from Britain and Portugal but also from Persia and Arabia.
Kannur is world famous for its enthralling ritual performance known as ‘theyyam’. Apart from that, the town is captivating with its interesting folk arts, folk music and ancient traditions and rituals. If you are a history buff, you’d want to visit impressive forts like Fort St. Angelos and Thalassery Fort. The Payyambalam Beach and Muzhappilangad Beach are great places to unwind and spend a relaxing day by the seashore.
Since it is a coastal town, Kannur experiences a humid tropical climate and receives very heavy rainfall during the months of July and August. There is not much difference in temperatures during summer and winter months, so you can visit this small town whenever you want, barring of course, the monsoon months.
