Majuli

Majuli: India’s Largest River-Island

If you look forward to relax and have a laid-back vacation amidst unparalleled scenic beauty, Majuli is an ideal destination for you. Located in Assam, this island of river Brahmaputra is the largest river-island in India. At about 200 kilometres from Guwahati, the island is accessible via ferries from the city of Johrat.

Majuli is essentially a wetland with enormous flora and fauna. The magnificent sights of rare and endangered species of wildlife and exotic birds are sure to mesmerise nature-lovers and wildlife-enthusiasts. During winters, this picturesque island is literally a bird-watcher’s paradise with several species of migratory birds like the Siberian crane, pelican and dark wild goose arriving here.

Kamalabari and Garamur are the two of the major villages in the island located close to the ferry port. For those who have a keen interest in history and culture, the tiny museum of Ahom royal artefacts located here is a great place to visit. The tourism department conducts various fun-activities like bird-watching tours and bicycling, which are highly recommended for visitors.

One amazing fact about Majuli is that it is an almost pollution-free island as there are no polluting industries or factories present here. But the sad part is that the island is shrinking fast due to soil erosion. According to experts, if the soil-erosion remains prevalent at this rate, the island will cease to exist within two decades! During monsoon, most of the island disappears under the waters of the mighty Brahmaputra. General weather of this destination is Rainy. This destination is of type City.
