Gateway of India
Gateway of India is a monument built in 1924, during the British rule in Mumbai. Located on the waterfront in the Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai and overlooking the Arabian Sea; the structure was erected to commemorate the landing of their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder, when they visited India in 1911. Later it was used as a landing place for British governors and other prominent people. In earlier times, it would have been the first structure that visitors arriving by boat in Mumbai would have seen. It is the city's top tourist attraction.
Washing laundry
Washing Laundry or popularly known as "Dhobi Ghat" is the world's largest human-powered outdoor laundry. Dhobi Ghat is a very popular attraction among foreign tourists. The washers, locally known as Dhobis, work in the open to wash the clothes from Mumbai's hotels, guest houses, and hospitals.
Fisherman Village
When Mumbai ( formerly called Bombay ) was a collection of seven small islands, the fisherman also called as "Koli" were the original inhabitants of Mumbai. Koli families still do the age old fishing business by getting into the sea early morning and sometimes late night.One can find koli women equally working and helping their husbands to dry, clean and prepare fishes ready to sell in nearby market.
Marine Drive
Marine Drive is a 4.3-kilometre-long, 'C '- shaped boulevard in South Mumbai. Marine Drive is also known as the Queen's Necklace because if viewed at night from an elevated point anywhere along the drive, the street lights resemble a string of pearls, forming a necklace.
Towards the northern end of Marine Drive lies one of the oldest seafronts called Chowpatty Beach. Marine Drive is considered as the best pathway for an evening stride. Is considered as the largest viewing gallery of the world.
Jain Temple
Jain temples are usually the most elaborate ones in India, and the Babu Amichand Panalal Adishwarji temple in walkeshwar is one of the famous jain temples in Mumbai. Built in 1904, it's adorned with colorful ornate sculptures and paintings. The temple is dedicated to Lord Adishwar ( also known as Rushabhdev ) , the first of 24 Jain "Tirthankaras" ( omniscients ) . The temple also contains idols of several other omniscients and also many tableaux of scenes from the Jain scriptures.
Hanging Garden
The Hanging Gardens in Mumbai, also known as Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens, are terraced gardens perched at the top of Malabar Hill. Hanging Gardens is a popular tourist destination in Mumbai. This terraced garden was built in 1880 and later renovated in 1921. Renowned for its splendid green vegetation and animal shaped hedges, is an interesting sight for anyone who visits this spot.
Mumbai view Garden
Mumbai view Garden is situated on top of Mumbai's Malabar Hill. This park is named after Jawaharlal Nehru's wife, Kamala Nehru. It extends over an area of about 4, 000 square feet and provides a glistening sight of the city of Mumbai. From this garden, one can enjoy the spectacular sight of the Chowpatty Beach and also Marine Drive ( Queen's Necklace ) . With 4, 000 sq feet widespread lush greenery, it makes for a cool atmosphere making this garden one of the most pleasant places in the city
Gandhi House
Gandhi House also called "Mani Bhavan", was Mahatma Gandhi's Mumbai headquarters for about 17 years - from 1917-1934. It is here Gandhi laid the foundation for many independence movements like Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi and Khilafat movement. Mani Bhavan is a museum which the visitors can visit to see Mahatma Gandhi's pictures depicting his life leads, the room that Gandhi used during his stay here is on the second floor - there is a glass partition and people can see through two of his spinning wheels, a book and floor bed still preserved.
Crawford Market
Named after Arthur Crawford, the first Municipal Commissioner of the city. Now renamed Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market in honour of a famous social reformer who lived in the 19th Century who, together with his wife, was a pioneer in women's education.The design is a mixture of Norman and Flemish architecture.
Crawford Market is a popular spot for buying all the household items.Crawford Market was the main wholesale market till 1966. Many imported goods such as food items, cosmetics, and furniture are also available at discounted rates.
Victoria Terminus
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus ( CST ) , formerly Victoria Terminus ( VT ) , is the most historic railway station in Mumbai. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1887 the architecture has influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival and traditional Mughal buildings. This was the first terminus station in the subcontinent. It became a commercial palace representing the economic wealth of the nation. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India, approximately 2 million people pass through the station everyday.
University of Mumbai
Established in 1857, University of Mumbai ( known earlier as University of Bombay ) is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India. It is one of the first three oldest public state universities in India. The campus houses academic and administrative departments. Splended architecture, tall cielings and one of the oldest places in Mumbai, is surely a place one should visit.
Mumbai High Court
Mumbai High Court is one of the oldest High Courts of India. The first Chief Justice, the Attorney General and Solicitor General of Independent India were from this court. It is located in Fort precinct of Mumbai. Beautiful structure built with black stone is one of the oldest and biggest courts in Western India. The statues of 'Justice' and 'Mercy' are on the top of the Mumbai High Court which serve as a source of inspiration for law abiding citizens.
